The Asia Optical Fiber Communication
& Optoelectronic Exposition & Conference (AOE) 2008 took place
from October 30th to November 2nd in Shanghai. The AOE,
co-sponsored by the Optical Society of America (OSA), IEEE/LEOS,
the Chinese Optical Society (COS) and Wen Global Solutions
(WGS), covered four distinct areas: optical fibers, fiber
components and subsystems; optoelectronic devices and materials;
optical sensors and biophotonics; and displays, solid-state
lighting, and optoelectronics in energy.
AOE 2008 brought together over
600 senior experts to present their work at this very
successful international technical event. They came from
well-known companies, universities and research institutes from
around the world, including highly respected experts such as Dr.
Rod C. Alferness, chief scientist of Bell Labs; Dr. Wang Jianli,
vice president of Fiberhome; Zhang Chengliang, deputy CTO of
China Telecom Research Institute; Dr. Zhang Qi and Prof. Du
Liangzhen from ZTE; Professor Shuji Nakamura from the University
of California at Santa Barbara; Professor Sune Svanberg from
Lund University; and Dr. Shi Zhengrong, chairman and CEO of
Suntech Power. They shared their latest achievements and
thoughts in science, technology and innovation, and provided
valuable guidance on future development and technology
advancement of the industry.
This year, AOE 2008 included over 300 technical sessions,
including 4 plenary keynote speeches, 6 tutorials, 2 short
courses and more than 200 technical presentations. Numerous hot
topics were addressed, such as 100G optical transmission, FTTH
broadband access, commercialization of university-developed
photonics technologies, high capacity systems and technologies,
and new fiber designs. Finally, the BizTech forum and the poster
session on the exhibition floor enabled all attendees to have
more thorough and convenient technical discussions.
Hundreds of companies exhibited AOE 2008 to show their
latest products and technologies, at a larger scale than past
years. The exhibition attracted thousands of domestic Chinese
and international attendees; more than 97% were professional
visitors. They covered every sector of the industry, with a
majority from R&D and procurement. International participation
increased again this year, with representatives from the United
States, Europe, Japan, Korea, Israel and Russia. Many exhibitors
successfully connected with new customers and received new
orders at AOE 2008.AOE remains central in the optical
communication and optoelectronic industry in Asia as the place
“where science and industry merge.” International experts and
buyers will continue to gather at AOE and foster industrial
development through technical communication and business
cooperation.
